Pallets for air freight
On air freight the pallet is not just packaging, it is billable weight. That single fact changes the specification more than anything else about the mode.
Weight is the constraint
Air freight is charged on weight or volumetric weight, whichever is greater, so every kilogram of pallet is a kilogram you pay to fly. Wet used pallets are heavier than dry ones, which is a real cost here rather than a footnote. Where weight dominates, the sensible questions are whether the pallet can be lighter, whether the load can be built lower, and occasionally whether it needs a wooden pallet at all.
Height and build
Air cargo loads are built to contours and height limits that differ from a trailer or container. Pallet height eats into usable build height, and an unstable build gets rejected at the handling agent rather than at your dock. Tell us the height limit you are working to and whether the consignment is being built onto an aircraft unit at the airport.
Treatment still applies
Speed does not change the plant-health position. Solid wood packaging flown to a destination that requires treated and marked wood packaging needs to be treated and marked, exactly as it would by sea or road. Air consignments move fast, which means there is less time to fix a marking problem discovered late.
What to tell us
Weight target, build height limit, unit dimensions, destination, and whether the handling agent has given you a specification. That is usually enough for a sensible recommendation.

The rules behind this page
When ISPM15 applies — and when it does not
Which goods, materials and destinations bring the standard into play. An expensive thing to get wrong in either direction.
Export documentation for palletised freight
The paperwork that travels with a palletised consignment, and where the pallet itself appears in it.
Tell us where it's going and we'll help you choose
Send your destination, pallet size, quantity and deadline, or upload photographs of the pallets and marks you already have. A person reads every enquiry.
