Road into the EU is the route where both sets of rules show up at once — plant health on the way in, and packaging questions from the customer once the goods arrive.
Groupage handles pallets harder than you expect
A groupage pallet is moved, re-stacked and re-loaded several times between your dock and the consignee, often by people with no interest in your goods and no visibility of what is inside. Corner damage, forks through bottom boards and pallets dragged rather than lifted are normal. A pallet specified for a single gentle full-load movement is frequently the wrong pallet for groupage.
If your freight moves as groupage, say so. It is one of the more useful pieces of information you can give us.
Footprint and the receiving site
Trailer fill and the consignee's handling equipment pull in different directions. Continental sites are frequently configured around the 1200 x 800 mm footprint, while UK loads are often built on 1200 x 1000 mm. Neither is wrong — but the decision should be made deliberately, ideally after asking the consignee what their racking and handling expect.
Two sets of questions on one journey
Solid wood packaging moving from Great Britain into the EU generally needs to be treated and marked, and is subject to checking on arrival. Separately, EU customers increasingly ask about the packaging itself under packaging law. The mark answers the first question and says nothing about the second. Keeping them apart in your replies saves a great deal of confusion.
Practical points before the load goes
Most problems on this route are found on the loading bay, not at the border, if anyone looks.
- Every wooden component treated and marked, including bracing and chocks
- Marks legible and visible without unstacking the load
- Pallet counts, dimensions and gross weights matching the paperwork
- No overhang, if the consignee racks the pallets on arrival
- Photographs of the marks before the doors close
