Pallets for sea freight
Sea freight punishes two things: wasted container space and moisture. Both are influenced by the pallet, and both are cheaper to solve before the container is packed.
Container fill is a pallet decision
The footprint that suits your warehouse may leave a strip of unused width down a container. Over a regular programme, that strip is real money. Tell us the container type and the unit dimensions of your goods and the footprint question can be answered arithmetically rather than by habit — occasionally the answer is a bespoke size, and occasionally it is simply the other standard footprint.
Moisture over a long transit
A sealed container goes through repeated heating and cooling cycles at sea, and moisture in the load finds the coldest surface. Wet pallets are one of the larger moisture reservoirs you can put in a container, and the consequences land on cartons, labels and the goods themselves rather than on the pallet.
Where the goods are moisture-sensitive, the condition of the pallets matters as much as their strength. Dry stock, stored under cover, is worth specifying explicitly — and it is one of the clearer arguments for new pallets over yard-stored used stock.
Handling at an unknown far end
You know how the load leaves. You often do not know how it will be handled on arrival, how many times it will be moved, or whether it will be stacked in a warehouse you will never see. Sea freight is the mode where it pays to specify for more handling than you expect rather than less.
Treatment, dunnage and bracing
Sea consignments are usually the ones with the most loose timber in them — chocks, bracing, cradles. All of it is wood packaging. If the movement requires treated and marked wood packaging, the bracing has to comply as well as the pallets, and that needs deciding at the packing stage.
